Our story

A father.
A son.
A brush.

Joe Penney started this company in 2007 with one truck and a phone book. His son Alex grew up sanding cabinet doors on Saturdays. Today they run every job between them.

Most painters in San Diego are crews you hire through a sales office. Quote comes from someone in a polo shirt; the work comes from someone you've never met.

We're different on purpose. Joe quotes the job. Alex runs the job. The crew has been with us for years, not weeks. Nobody answers a phone but us.

We turn down work we can't do well. We tell people when paint won't fix the problem. We don't use subcontractors, we don't cut prep, and we don't leave until you've walked the job with us and signed off.

If you wouldn't paint it that way in your own kitchen, you shouldn't paint it that way in someone else's.

Penney's Professional Painting just finished my kitchen and living room, and the results are fantastic. My living room has high vaulted ceilings that other local painters wanted to charge a premium for, but this father-and-son duo gave me the best quote by far. They were professional, easy to work with, and handled the difficult tall walls with no issues. Support this local family business — they earned it.

Can't recommend Penney's Pro Painting enough. They handled both our exterior restucco paint job and a garage epoxy floor, and the whole experience was easy from start to finish. Pricing came in lower than I expected, the crew was genuinely friendly, and they worked around our odd schedule without any hassle. On top of all that, they were quick — no dragging the job out. If you need painting done right without the runaround, these are your guys.

Alex and Joe are top notch painters. They've done multiple jobs for me and clients and always come in competitively priced, have attention to detail and go above and beyond.

Where we work

San Diego County,
coast to canyon.

We work in a tight radius on purpose — close enough that we can swing back the next day if a wall needs another touch. If you're in San Diego County, we probably already paint your neighbour's house.

Before you call

Common
questions.

What makes Penney's different from other San Diego painting companies?

Two things, and both are checkable. We have never used a subcontractor since starting in 2007 — the people who quote your job are the people who paint it. And we tell customers when not to hire us: if your stucco is failing, your cabinets are water-damaged, or a cheaper product would do the same job, we say so before quoting. Most of this website is written that way on purpose.

Will Joe or Alex actually be on my job?

Yes. Joe or Alex walks every estimate, runs every job on site, and does the final walkthrough. You are not handed to a project coordinator or a rotating crew you have never met. That is the whole operating model, and it is the reason we cap how much work we take at once.

What happens during a free estimate?

Joe or Alex comes out, looks at the actual surfaces rather than guessing from photos, and points out anything that should be addressed before paint — cracks, moisture, failing wood. You get a written quote naming the specific products and the prep included, usually within about two days. There is no charge and no obligation.

Do I need to be home while you paint?

For exterior work, no — most customers carry on as normal. For interiors, it helps to be there at the start so we can confirm colors and access, but you do not need to be present throughout, and you do not need to move out. We use low-VOC interior paint and seal off work areas so the house stays livable.

What if I am not happy with the finished work?

We do a walkthrough with you before we call the job done, and anything you flag gets fixed then rather than after the invoice. Because Joe or Alex ran the job personally, there is no dispute about what was agreed — you are talking to the person who did the work.

How soon can you start?

It depends on the season. Spring and fall book up fastest for exterior work, and interiors are usually easier to schedule at short notice, particularly during the hot inland summer or the coastal marine-layer months when exterior conditions are poor anyway. Call and we will tell you honestly where the calendar stands.
